Lovely Xinjiang: A Multicultural Oasis

Integrating Design, Culture, and Cuisine

Inspired by the traditional craft of grinding bricks and butt joints in local buildings, Jie Yang creates a stunning Xinjiang restaurant that celebrates the region's diverse culture and promotes inclusivity.

The Lovely Xinjiang restaurant is a testament to the power of design in showcasing cultural diversity and fostering unity. Designed by Jie Yang, this remarkable project seamlessly integrates style interpretation, cultural and creative products, and featured catering. The restaurant not only offers delectable Xinjiang cuisine but also serves as a platform for promoting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The inspiration for Lovely Xinjiang came from the unique tiling process found on the surfaces of Uygur buildings in the region. By following the form of grinding brick splicing, Jie Yang and the design team transformed various cultural elements into intricate graphics. Each square block represents a different culture, symbolizing the multiculturalism and inclusive mentality of Xinjiang's opening to the world. Together, these blocks form a picture of "World Solidarity," reconnecting the world through the new Silk Road.

One of the main challenges of this project was to express the culture of dozens of different nationalities in one place and integrate them into a cohesive whole. The designers tackled this challenge by drawing inspiration from the Uygur brick grinding butt joint technology. By incorporating various elements of Xinjiang into different shapes, they created a patchwork that represents the region's multicultural and inclusive spirit.

The realization of Lovely Xinjiang required extensive cultural research and collaboration with traditional craftsmen from Xinjiang. The designers meticulously incorporated unique Xinjiang national handicraft technology into the interior decoration of the restaurant, combining it with modern high-tech props such as acoustics and photoelectric elements. The result is a truly immersive dining experience that transports guests to the heart of Xinjiang's vibrant culture.

Spanning an impressive 17,000 square meters, Lovely Xinjiang features 56 private rooms and six performance and translation halls. Each private room is themed with national characteristics, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of different ethnic groups. The project, which started in February 2017 in Urumqi, Xinjiang, was completed in June 2018 and officially opened its doors to the public in January 2019.

The exceptional design of Lovely Xinjiang has garnered recognition and acclaim. In 2020, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. Lovely Xinjiang stands out for its ability to integrate industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

Lovely Xinjiang is not just a restaurant; it is a celebration of diversity, a testament to the power of design, and a gateway to the rich cultural tapestry of Xinjiang. Through its unique fusion of art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology, Lovely Xinjiang invites guests on a journey of discovery, where flavors, sights, and experiences intertwine to create a truly unforgettable dining experience.
